It’s Beavers Day!

The International Beavers Day was celebrated for the first time in 2009 on the initiative of the American organization Beavers: Wetlands & Wildlife (BWW).

The aim of the holiday is to draw attention to the role in nature and protection of these large rodents, both European and Canadian beavers. They eat the buds, bark and leaves of the trees, before gnawing the branches and trunk into smaller pieces to build with. The dams are useful in preventing floods and droughts, restoring the northern wetlands and helping to cleanse the water. The largest beaver-built dam is in Wood Buffalo National Park, Alberta, Canada and is 850m long!
