Ecobal’s Bold Pledge to the Global Biodiversity Standard: Leading the Charge for a Sustainable Future
In a world where the impacts of climate change and biodiversity loss are increasingly evident, the need for effective, nature-based solutions has never been more critical. At Ecobal, we’re not just talking about change—we’re committed to making it happen. That’s why we are proud to announce our pledge to the Global Biodiversity Standard (TGBS), an essential framework designed to ensure that nature-based solutions deliver real, measurable benefits to both ecosystems and communities.
The Global Biodiversity Standard: A Game Changer
Three years after the Kew Declaration united global stakeholders in a common goal to protect biodiversity, mitigate carbon emissions, and enhance livelihoods, nature-based solutions have gained formal recognition from the United Nations Environment Assembly for their potential to restore our natural world. However, many interventions, such as tree planting and agroforestry, have sometimes failed to yield positive outcomes and have even caused ecological and community harm.
Alarmingly, 90% of major corporations involved in ecosystem restoration do not report ecological results, nor do they assess the social or economic impacts on local stakeholders. This is where the Global Biodiversity Standard steps in. Developed by global scientific experts, the TGBS supports organizations committed to biodiversity recovery, carbon absorption, and socio-economic benefits for local communities. The Standard promotes initiatives that:
- Select appropriate sites to enhance native biodiversity.
- Enhance the protection of existing habitats and biodiversity.
- Protect, restore, and manage biodiversity in consultation and partnership with local communities and other stakeholders.
- Aim to maximize biodiversity recovery through ecosystem restoration.
- Avoid and reduce invasive or potentially invasive species.
- Prioritize the use of native, threatened, and rare species.
- Promote biodiversity and adaptive capacity.
- Implement robust monitoring, evaluation, and adaptive management of biodiversity.
Ecobal’s Commitment to TGBS
At Ecobal, our mission has always been to push the boundaries of sustainability. We recognize that true progress comes from a holistic approach—one that protects biodiversity, absorbs carbon, and uplifts communities. By pledging to the Global Biodiversity Standard, we are aligning our efforts with the highest standards of accountability and transparency.
Our Commitment:
- Enhance Biodiversity Recovery: We are actively restoring degraded natural habitats and protecting biodiversity. Through collaborations with local and international partners, we ensure that our actions lead to tangible improvements in ecosystem health.
- Promote Carbon and Methane Absorption: Our investments in nature-based solutions, such as reforestation and afforestation, are designed to maximize carbon and methane absorption. We participate in carbon offset programs that align with the TGBS guidelines, ensuring that our efforts contribute to real, positive outcomes.
- Foster Socio-Economic Benefits: We believe that environmental sustainability and socio-economic progress go hand in hand. Our projects are designed to support local communities, creating sustainable environments that also provide economic and social benefits.
- Monitoring and Reporting: Transparency and accountability are key to our approach. We have established robust monitoring and reporting mechanisms to track the impact of our initiatives and are committed to sharing our progress and learnings transparently with stakeholders and the public.
